Pattern.
Anton Andrienko's project is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of pattern - a systematically repeated pattern or image within which each of us exists. Natural, social and cultural patterns construct our reality. They are the basis of humanity's collective memory, traditions and rituals, art and high technology. To varying degrees, patterns define our identity, aesthetic tastes and ways of interacting with the world around us, offering a set of stereotypical behavioral reactions and solutions.
Andrienko's focus is on the visual patterns of contemporary Russian everyday life. In 2018, for several months the artist conducted shoots in different districts of Moscow, “collecting” patterns in clothes and trying to analyze the meaning of a pattern and its nature. The archive of more than 200 photos collected by the author is a visual representation of pattern thinking and the extent of its influence on our (un)conscious choices. According to the artist, the pattern interested him primarily “as a metaphor for cyclicality, endless repetition. Patterns, i.e. thought patterns, dictate people's choice of clothing. As a result, they themselves become a kind of pattern - a background in reality that we don't notice. A pattern around us, a pattern in our heads, a pattern on ourselves.”
